Politics and Theology from Reuel K. Sample

Senator Chris Dodd (D) of Connecticut announced today that he will not run for reelection.  Despite the joyful news of getting rid of one of the country’s most corrupt Senators, the GOP needs to be careful in their response.

Democrats are loosing 4 seats to retirement this year.  While Republicans are loosing 6 seats for the same reason – the Democrats are considered more at risk.  (Fox News)

Republicans, however, have to overcome two major hurdles.

First is the division in their own party between conservatives and moderates.  Moderates such as Olympia Snowe and others have continuously disappointed Republicans across the country by voting with Democrats on key issues.  They have embraced the idea of bi-partisanship – not understanding that the Democrats aren’t giving up anything.

Meghan McCain writes on her blog:

I am very proud to have the opportunity to speak on how the Republican Party can continue to find ways to be more inclusive and return to its core values and beliefs. Some photos from the weekend are below. (http://mccainblogette.com/)

These people and others do not realize that the reason why the GOP lost the election in 2008 was precisely because it got away from its core values and beliefs – though not the ones that Meghan is talking about.

Fortunately, RNC chair Michael Steele is waking up:

RNC Chairman Michael Steele, appearing Wednesday on “Fox and Friends,” said the right-wing populist movement “puts in stark relief where the American people are” and asserted it’s important for the GOP to “understand this so that we can move towards it, embrace it, and then move into the future.” (UPI.com)

About time – because I continue to believe that if the GOP will embrace its core values of limited government, less taxes, and individual freedom – they will win just about every time.

The other obstacle is overcome a very persuasive ignorance in this country.

This audio clip is from a few months ago, but it illustrates an ignorance that got President Obama and the Democrats elected in the first place.

Unfortunately, no amount of reasoned discussion will overcome such an incorrect view of government.  However, we must try.  The conservative movement must be in the cities, in the community centers, on campuses, and in churches.  We must be reaching out – providing for basic needs, but also educating at the same time.  Instead of Acorn, we should be the Oak Tree – strong, stately, and helping people get to the point where they can be Oak Trees themselves.

Goodbye, Senator Todd.  We will not miss you.  Here’s to hoping that we elect responsible Senators who will wipe out all the mess you have caused.

“This country wants us to move” on health care reform – Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn.

No,  Congressman, they do not.  According to the latest Rasmussen poll, 52% of voters oppose the bill.  42% favor it, leaving 6% who do not really know what is going on. Rasmussen Reports.

What is even more unsettling, is that despite the numbers that are opposed to this bill, according to the same Rasmussen poll a majority believe it will go through.  In other words,  Speaker Pelosi, Senator Reid, and President Obama do not really care what the American people want.

Why should they – because it is not really about health care anyway.  If these changes were truly along the lines of reform that are promised – then the first order of business would be to reduce the tremendous burden that frivolous lawsuits put on the health care system.  The bill does not address tort reform in any meaningful way.  If it were about reducing health care costs, then the bill would allow insurance companies to compete nationwide, and for businesses and individuals to purchase insurance across state lines.  Such competition would naturally lower costs.  The democrats are opposed to such measures.  If we wanted to lower the overall cost of health care on families we would reduce the taxes that individuals and businesses have to pay – allowing them to purchase the plans that they want.  Congress instead wants to raise taxes.

This is not about reform, nor about health care.  This move is nothing short of socializing 1/6th of our nation’s economy.  The Dems wants to do it with the oil business – why not health care?

Rep.  DeLauro, Americans do not want this bill to pass.  We do not want to be like the failed socialized countries around the world.  We will do everything legally possible to stop you.

The former Vice-President, and Nobel Prize recipient, got caught in a blatant lie.

It seems to me that if the environmental movement wants to gain any traction in the aftermath of “email-gate”, they should drop this guy somewhere cold. Every time he opens his mouth, he lies.

Then again, the environmental movement is based on a series of premises that will not hold up under serious scientific study. I stress serious since up to this point science seems to have been replaced with opinion, and a dedicated search of the truth has been replaced with a dogmatic pursuit of an agenda.

Washington, DC is once again out to show you that it knows better than you do as to how to manage your own property.

A new bill entitled The Clean Water Restoration Act seeks to remove the word “navigable” from the list of water types that it has control over. In effect, if a farm or lot has mudflats, puddles, or standing water of any kind, that land now would come under the direct authority and control of the Corps Of Engineers and the EPA. Read the entire article at Fox News.

Private property – and the ability to acquire, keep, or sell private property – is at the heart of our entire economic and social system. Our Founding Fathers linked private property ownership with the right to vote. To own land – to build and own a home – is still the American dream. Yet another bill is threatening to take that away – again.

Remember Pfizer Corporation in New London, Connecticut? They successfully convinced the town council to strip property owners of their rights – seize their land or pay chump change on the dollar – so that the drug company could build a new building complex. The Supreme Court – in an act of lunacy – held that such seizure is appropriate under the Eminent Domain Clause. So, businesses lost their buildings and people lost their homes.

Pfizer has now announced that it is moving away from New London, taking 1400 jobs with them. The empty building – and ruined lives – they will leave behind. Read the entire article at the New York Times.

One supporter of the Clean Water Restoration Act states – “There are a number of very generous exemptions in there particularly for ranchers and farmers…” How kind – generous exemptions for one’s own land.

What then do we do about pollutants in the environment? Not by more government control, but by less. Private property – and the protection of it – puts an “enlighted self-interest” into play. In other words – we don’t want that on our land. We want our land, our home, our water to be as clean and healthy as possible. If we achieve it on our own place, but are threatened by neighbors – then we take those neighbors to court – either in a civilian tort of recklessness or a criminal court for endangerment. The punishments would range from orders to clean up, to fines, to sale of land. Not loss of land – but sale of land to another individual who would then take over proper management of the property. Notice how the government does not get one square inch out of the deal.

Fortunately this bill does not seem to be getting a lot of traction in the Senate, although it did get out of committee fairly easily. Keep an eye on it – because this bill is not about clean water, or pollutant free air – but about controlling private property rights.

Poll Shows Hoffman With 5-Point Lead Over Owens in New York Congressional Race – FOXNews.com

Here is what kills me – the Republican candidate bowed out and endorsed the Democrat candidate.   Sounds like she was going to do a Specter – get elected in one party, but change after the elections.  Good thing the voters were wise to what she really is.
